Facing your website fears part 1: visualize your future
This post is a continuation of Facing your website fears: It’s not as scary as you think.
Have you spent time creating a business plan and outlining goals? Or are you flying by the seat of your pants? Goal setting is one of those things that people either love or hate. If you’re the latter, this section is geared more towards you.
Goal setting is a necessary part of running a business, but for a lot of people it can be a tedious and overwhelming task. It seems so clinical and reeks of a stuffy suit. The act of writing something down makes it real, and that can be terrifying. You’re instantly hit with a feeling of accountability. It’s a lot of pressure to live up to. Many solopreneurs get frozen by this fear and just breeze past this step. They opt to take a more “go with the flow” approach.
The harsh reality is that without goals, you have no idea where you’re going or what you should be doing. It’s like you’re walking through a maze blindfolded. You feel lost and stagnant and don’t feel confident about yourself or your business. Accountability is scary but it’s a necessary motivator.
Can you build a website that will grow with your business if you don’t even know where your business is going? That’s rhetorical. The answer is no. Without having clear goals, you’re only building for your immediate needs. Once you’ve outgrown your website you’ll be forced to redo the entire thing or risk being held back by an outdated site.
I work with a lot of people who get overwhelmed at the thought of setting goals. If you feel the same way, you should know you’re not alone. When working with a client for the first time I lead them through an exercise that makes goal setting a much more enjoyable process. We focus on your vision first and then quantifiable actions later.
Following this method of setting goals removes the barrier of feeling overwhelmed and makes it a more enjoyable process. And once you’re done you have the added benefit of a path forward and the confidence that you can achieve your vision.
